Solar...What is a maximum powerpoint tracker (MPPT)?
What does it do? how does it work?
Solar panels are almost current sources. That is, they put out almost the same current as the voltage across them rises, up to the near the maximum voltage that they can put out. Let's say you have a panel that is putting out 25 volts at 4 amps. The power out is 25 x 4 = 100 watts. If you double the load on the panel, you will get 12.5 volts at a teeny bit more than 4 amps, or 12.5 x 4 = 50 watts. If you cut the load in half, you'll run into the maximum voltage of the panel, and get maybe 26 volts at 2 amps, or 26 x 2 = 52 watts.
An MPPT circuit samples the output power several times a second, and adjusts the load to find that maximum power point to get maximum power transfer from the solar panel. There is a penalty, as the MPPT circuit itself draws power, so this doesn't make sense for systems smaller than about 400 watts.
