Reader Video

Is reading a book in a video considered copyright infringement?
Assuming the video will not make any money and the reader is not the author of the book.
Short answer: If the video is distributed, it is. You do not need to make money to be in violation of copyright laws. You merely need to "publish" said works, even in an alternative format (i.e. book to video).
Now, there is the "fair use doctrine" exception (google it) that says that if it is used for educational, religious, etc... uses, then you can in fact use the copyrighted materials. But this is such a crap shoot on what is and what is not fair use that I would be extremely careful.
I would first try to get permission from the copyright holder (the publishing company that published the book, or if the book is self published, the author). Just look inside the cover and see what name is after Copyright (c) (year) X. The "x" is the copyright holder; Google their business, call them up, and let the person that you talk to know that you are trying to get permission to use one of their copyrighted works. You might just get lucky. If you do get permission, get it in writing, so that you can prove it if you need down the road.
