why film- foil capacitors failure in voltagebreakdown test when capcitance value is large?
for 0.47mfd /1000 vdc No voltage breakdown failure but when same material is used and 1.5 mfd /1000 vdc is tested for same voltage, breakdown failure % is increased
2) material used -37/10 poly propylene, 33. al foil,( non series winding)
3)voltage breakdown test at 2500 vdc
As cap scales up the for the same material the area of the material is increasing. All films have some leakage component. As you increasing the amount of the material and apply the same voltage the charge on the capacitor increases in a linear way (Q=CV). As the amount of charge is increased the probability of BD also increases with the larger caps for a given voltage.
